For a local company, being visible at that moment is far more valuable than collecting generic traffic: the person is already looking for a solution in a specific area and often wants to make a decision within minutes.

That is what local SEO is about. It is not about repeating a city name twenty times or creating identical pages where “Barcelona” is simply replaced with “Mataró”. It is about giving Google enough signals to understand what you do, where you do it, who you are relevant to and why it should trust your business over nearby alternatives.

The good news is that a small business can compete very effectively in local searches. It does not need the authority of a national brand. It needs to be clearly relevant for a specific intent and a specific location. In this article we explain which factors matter, what you can control and which mistakes commonly stop Google from showing a business locally.

What “showing up in your city” actually means

When we talk about local SEO, there are two different spaces worth separating. One is the traditional organic search results: websites, service pages, articles and directories. The other is the local Google Maps block, where businesses appear with addresses, reviews, opening hours and distance.

The same business can work on both. Your website can rank a service page while your Google Business Profile appears in Maps. In fact, when both are built properly they reinforce each other: the website contributes context, services and authority; the local profile contributes geographic presence, reviews and business data.

Google typically combines three broad concepts in local search: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance: if someone searches for a hairdresser from the other side of the city, a closer option may have an advantage. But relevance and prominence can be developed substantially.

1. Google needs to understand exactly what you do

The first problem for many local businesses is not competition. It is ambiguity. A website says “integrated solutions”, “we care for you”, “unique experiences” or “tailored services”, but barely explains in concrete language what the business actually sells.

Google needs explicit signals. If you are a physiotherapy clinic, say so. If you provide full home renovations, list the services. If you are a pharmacy offering dermocosmetics, nutrition and compounding, each service should be easy to understand. If you run a Japanese restaurant, do not hide that fact behind a creative brand concept.

This starts with the Google Business Profile: the right primary category, relevant secondary categories, services, description, opening hours and consistent business data. It continues on the website with pages that explain each important service in enough depth.

The rule is simple: if a potential customer could wonder “does this company do exactly what I need?”, Google also needs to be able to answer that question.

2. Location should be part of the architecture, not something added at the end

A useful local page is not a national service page with “in Mataró” added to the H1. The location has to make sense within the content.

For example, our page about SEO in Mataró should explain what we do there, what types of businesses operate in the area, how local acquisition works and why the service is relevant to that market. The same applies to SEO in Badalona, SEO in Granollers, SEO in the Maresme and SEO in Barcelona.

When a company creates twenty city pages copied word for word and changes only the place name, it ends up with weak pages that are almost interchangeable. The objective should not be “have one URL for every city”. It should be have a real reason for each URL to exist.

A good local landing page can include examples of local searches, services with specific demand, nearby experience or cases, service areas, travel times when relevant, common questions and links to other pages that help the user decide.

3. Your Google Business Profile is not a listing you configure once

Many businesses create the profile, upload a logo and never look at it again. That is a mistake. The profile is one of the central pieces of local visibility and should be maintained just like the website.

Review regularly:

Primary category. It should describe the main activity, not simply the broadest-sounding option.

Secondary categories. Use them when they represent real services, not to try to appear for everything.

Opening hours. Especially holidays, vacations and special schedules.

Services and products. They help explain the offer more clearly.

Recent photos. Storefront, interior, team, products, work or real spaces.

Questions and answers. Keep an eye on what information appears.

Website link. It should lead to the most useful page, which is not always the homepage.

A complete profile does not guarantee the number-one position, but an incomplete profile gives Google less information and users fewer reasons to choose you.

4. Reviews matter for quantity, quality and context

Reviews are a trust signal for both people and search engines. But the goal is not to collect one hundred reviews overnight. A steady, natural pattern is usually far more credible than an artificial spike.

Beyond the number of reviews and the average rating, the content matters. A review saying “great” provides less context than one explaining which service the customer received, which problem was solved and what the experience was like. There is no need to ask customers to include keywords. Simply make it easy for them to describe their experience in their own words.

Respond to reviews as well. Not with the same template every time, but with short, human replies. This shows that the business is active and, more importantly, improves the impression for the next potential customer reading them.

Avoid buying reviews or encouraging fake feedback. Beyond the risk of removal or penalties, the pattern often becomes obvious and damages exactly what you were trying to build: trust.

5. Consistent business name, address and phone details still matter

If your company has one name on the website, another on Google, an old address in a directory and two different phone numbers across platforms, you are creating unnecessary noise.

Business name, address and phone number should stay consistent across the main places where your business appears: website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, professional directories, associations and sector platforms. You do not need hundreds of low-quality directory listings. It is better to have the references that actually matter in your sector or city correct and up to date.

Whenever you change address, phone number or opening hours, perform a wider review. Old information can stay online for years if nobody corrects it.

6. A local website should answer local questions

Local SEO does not end with a service landing page. Content can help answer the questions people have before they buy.

A medical centre can explain how to get there, which treatments are available, how services differ or what documentation a patient needs. A restaurant can cover groups, menus, allergies, bookings and events. A shop can explain availability, collection, returns or specific products. A professional service can clarify service areas, timelines, pricing processes or types of project.

This content does not need to mention the city in every sentence. It needs to be useful to people who could genuinely become customers in that area.

For retail businesses, for example, a strategy around local SEO for shops works better when the website stops being a five-section brochure and starts answering the questions that move a user from “I’m looking” to “I’m going there”.

7. Local links can be worth more than a hundred irrelevant links

A backlink is not valuable only because of a domain authority score. In local SEO, context also matters.

A business association in your town, a regional publication, a recognised supplier, a professional body, an organisation you collaborate with, a local event or a shared project can generate mentions that make far more sense for your business than purchased links from unrelated sites.

Ask yourself where it would be natural for your company to appear even if Google did not exist. Those places are often a good starting point.

Sponsorships, collaborations, original studies, useful guides, events and relationships with organisations in the area can turn into links without treating every mention as an artificial link-building campaign.

8. Proximity matters, but it does not mean you can only rank next to your front door

Physical location matters especially in Maps. A business 300 metres from the searcher may have an advantage over one eight kilometres away. That does not mean it is impossible to gain visibility in other areas, but it does mean geography cannot be ignored.

Service-area businesses such as installers, renovation companies, consultants or certain professional services can cover several towns. In these cases the website should explain clearly where the company works and, if local pages are created, each one should provide genuinely useful content.

For businesses with a physical location, the strategy is usually different: prioritise the radius where customers can realistically be acquired and expand into nearby searches where there is a commercial reason to do so.

Do not try to pretend you are located in a city where you are not by using virtual addresses or misleading information. Sustainable local SEO starts from the reality of the business.

9. Website experience also affects local acquisition

Reaching page one is not very useful if a visitor lands on the site and does not know what to do next. In local search, a large share of traffic comes from mobile devices and many decisions are made quickly.

The website should make key information easy to find:

what service you provide;

where you are or which area you cover;

how to contact you;

opening hours when relevant;

trust signals;

a clear CTA: call, book, request a quote, WhatsApp or make an appointment.

Speed matters too. If someone is standing in the street looking for a business and your page takes several seconds to show the main content, the next result is only one tap away.

10. Tracking rankings alone is not enough

The goal of local SEO is not to send a screenshot showing that one keyword reached position four. The goal is to generate business.

Track impressions and clicks in Search Console, views and actions in the Google Business Profile, visits to local landing pages, calls, forms, bookings and requests for directions. Where possible, connect conversions back to the page or channel that generated them.

Also watch the new queries Google starts testing your site for. Many opportunities first appear as small numbers of impressions in positions 15, 20 or 30. If a landing page begins gaining visibility for a commercially relevant search, it may justify better content, stronger internal links or additional authority signals.

This is particularly useful in local markets because absolute search volume may be small while the value of each search is high.

Local SEO mistakes that hold businesses back

We see the same patterns repeatedly:

Creating dozens of almost identical local pages. Replacing one city with another does not turn duplicate copy into useful content.

Using a generic homepage for everything. If you have several important services, each one needs its own context.

Ignoring Google Maps. Website and local profile should be developed together.

Never asking for reviews. Waiting for them to arrive spontaneously usually produces very few.

Buying links or reviews at scale. This can create more risk than advantage.

Publishing inconsistent data across platforms. Especially after moving premises or changing phone numbers.

Measuring rankings only. A position without calls, visits or leads does not pay the bills.

So what makes Google show your business in your city?

There is no single switch. Google needs a collection of consistent signals: your activity matches the search, your business is genuinely connected to the location, other users and websites recognise it and your information is reliable.

The strongest strategy usually combines a technically clean website, useful service pages, a well-designed local architecture, a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews, relevant local references and content that answers real questions.

The key is that all these signals tell the same story. If Google sees a clearly specialised company, properly connected to a location, mentioned by sensible sources and valued by real customers, it has far more reason to test that business in local results.

And once you begin to appear, the work is not finished. Searches change, new competitors arrive, reviews accumulate and Google discovers new queries. Local SEO works best as an ongoing system rather than a one-off optimisation that is completed and forgotten.

If you want to know what is limiting your local visibility, we can review your website, geographic landing pages and Google Business Profile and prioritise the changes that make the most sense before creating content simply for the sake of it.

The factors that help Google show a business in local search: relevance, location, reviews, website, Maps, links and
